Dear Neighbor-

After four years in the Vermont House, I am excited to be running for my third term as your state representative.

I am proud of the work we accomplished this past year, especially my involvement in passing the Groundwater Bill. The bill declares groundwater a public trust, enabling Vermonters (rather than out-of-state corporations) to control this critical resource.

This common-sense solution shows what can be accomplished when partisan politics are put aside and the needs of Vermonters are addressed.

I am asking for your vote once again this fall. I look forward to hearing both your concerns and your ideas for strengthening our communities.

Sincerely,

Dexter will fight for:

Rural Economic Development: With soaring fuel prices, national food scares, and manufacturing moving overseas, it is more critical than ever that we support local businesses and farms. State government should support our entrepreneurs and home-grown businesses, not give away tax breaks to lure multinational corporations to spend a few years here. Agricultural policy should encourage direct farm sales and local food systems. And our state institutions should buy Vermont-made products, not milk from the mid-west and paper from Canada. The more money we keep in-state, the stronger we keep our communities.

Education Funding: I continue to believe we should pay for schools through an income tax rather than the property tax. That idea finally got a serious hearing this year, and there is growing support for such a plan. We should also help school boards address the costs that drive up their budgets, not insult local boards and voters with two-vote schemes.

Universal Healthcare: Recent approaches to our healthcare crisis are not working. Not until we have all Vermonters in a single pool will we truly have a “system” of health care. Only then will we be able to contain the spiraling cost of healthcare. The forces opposing this are strong, but we must continue to push for what is right.

“Dexter has worked to bring local food into our schools to improve child nutrition and support our local economy.”
